Chapter 16

The Unseen

Rage pours through me as I slam the door to my apartment. Pounding from old Mrs. Gardner downstairs reminding me to keep quiet only fuels my fury. Throwing myself across the room, I hurtle down the dingy green communal stairs, fists pounding against her door, chest heaving in a mad attempt to force air into my lungs.

The door cracks open, faded blue eyes blinking out at me, a meagre chain meant for protection no match against my strength and determination. With a shout, I throw myself against it, shattering the hinges, knocking her to the seventies-style shag carpet with a groan. I stand for a moment, fists clenching as I loom over her, eyes narrowed in hatred as I glare down at the ancient busybody.

She quivers on the floor, arms above her head, eyes wide in trepidation. Steel grey curls, sagging flesh, mumu-type dress and apron give her the impression of an innocent pensioner. A smirk spreads across my face as I remember seeing her break a dog’s neck that was barking too wildly.

Gathering her courage, she scoots herself back, straightening her spine as she glares up at me. “You!” she seethes, her Czech accent always stronger in anger. “Always loud! Always making too much noise. All I want is to watch my shows.” Standing, she steps forward, ignoring my eyes narrowing in warning. Stabbing a bony finger in my chest, she spits out, “Why? Stomp, stomp, you shake my whole house. Bang, shout! Every day, all hours!”

Knocking her finger away with a growl, I advance on her. She stands her ground for a moment, then backs up a step, my lips curling into an ugly smile as I prowl towards her, letting her see the monster within. A soft cry leaves her lips as her back hits the wall, and with a lightning-fast move, I have her throat in my grasp, squeezing, taunting.

Her eyes fly wide when I don’t let up, knowing, understanding. Her time is up. She shouldn’t have provoked me, not today. She fades out of focus as I instead see my cherub on her knees, servicing the men that took her. I had stood, unnoticed as usual, just by the patio doors as she took them into her mouth. Watched as they chased her, watched her smile at them, taunt them, wiggle her ass at them.

The red haze descends again, wanting to strangle the men, wanting to watch their fear and terror as they choked out their last breaths beneath my fingers for daring to touch what is mine. MINE! God decreed it! I can even imagine the sputtering and soft begging as they
